It Only affects those with a family history

Yes it is true that genetics play a significant role in the development of glaucoma, but not everyone who has glaucoma got it through their genetics— after all, it has to start somewhere. Additionally, this could also be linked to the fact that maybe not everyone in your family got the proper examination and testing done for glaucoma— meaning that they may have had it for their whole life but were never diagnosed.

It only affects the elderly

Glaucoma is commonly more prevalent amongst the elderly, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t affect individuals who are younger. For instance, some babies are born with a form of congenital glaucoma which then later turns into a kind of secondary glaucoma. Although it is rare for an adult or child to get glaucoma, it certainly isn’t impossible.

It’s easily treatable

Unfortunately, there is no current cure for glaucoma. However, if it is detected earlier on, glaucoma can be treated with things such as eye drops, oral medications, laser surgery, or other forms of surgery. The goal in treating glaucoma is to help prevent you from going blind. As long as you are getting a yearly eye examination from Longwood Eye & LASIK Center, you will be examined for both glaucoma and cataracts, so if you do develop glaucoma, it should be caught fairly early on.
