How Old Is Too Old For LASIK Surgery?

LASIK surgery greenfield ma | Longwood Eye & LASIK Center Whether or not you would be a good candidate for a LASIK procedure is usually not dependent upon your age, but upon the health and stability of your eyes. The minimum age for LASIK surgery is 18 years old – when teenage eyes have stabilized – but there is really no age limit for LASIK vision correction.

There are certain requirements, however, that any patient must meet in order to be determined a good candidate for this procedure. Read on to learn more.

Our LASIK surgeons frequently treat patients in their 50s, 60s, and beyond – as long as they meet the standard requirements for candidacy. The patient’s overall health is usually the best determining factor – not their age.

To be a good LASIK candidate, your vision must be stable. In other words, your vision prescription must have remained the same for a year or more for you to be eligible for the procedure.

Your eyes must be in good health. Patients with cataracts or with serious refractive errors that are so severe they cannot be corrected with a LASIK procedure would not be eligible for the surgery.

In some cases, patients may be at an age where the potential for developing cataracts is greater, making it advisable for them to consider an alternative procedure or to wait until after they have had cataract surgery.

It is important to note that a LASIK procedure is typically done to correct vision at one distance. So, if you opt to have LASIK to correct your distance vision, you will likely still need to wear reading glasses following surgery. Many of our patients elect to have mono-vision LASIK, correcting one eye for distance and one eye for reading.

The take-away? Your surgeon will be able to evaluate your health, the health of your eyes, and determine which procedure for vision correction would be best for you. Call to schedule a consultation appointment, today.
