Sagging is an inevitable fact of life as we age, and the brow and forehead are usually the first areas on the face to show signs of aging. Also called a forehead lift, a brow lift is a cosmetic procedure that raises the eyebrows to correct sagging and decrease the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines, restoring a more youthful, alert appearance to the face. Here are the differences between the two methods associated with a brow lift.
Coronal brow lift
Also known as the traditional brow lift, the coronal incision is made from ear to ear across the top of the head and back in the hairline. The resulting scar is concealed within the hair. The forehead skin is lifted away from the underlying tissues and trimmed, and muscles are tightened and repositioned. This method also lifts the eyebrows. Excess skin is trimmed and skin is re-draped over the forehead before the incision is closed.
Endoscopic brow lift
As the preferred method for brow lifts, an endoscopic brow lift consists of making three to five short incisions near the hairline. An endoscope is inserted into one incision, allowing surgeons to see beneath the skin. Instruments that will lift the skin and reposition the muscles are inserted into the other incisions.
Recovery from brow lift
Recovery from a coronal brow lift is longer than with an endoscopic brow lift, because the length of the incision means more residual pain, swelling, bruising and itching. Most patients can return to work after about 10 days, avoiding strenuous activity for about a month.
Non-surgical options
Sometimes patients start out with more conservative treatments like BOTOX, which can be injected into the wrinkles around the eyes, forehead wrinkles and frown lines. If you still notice sagging after treatment, a brow lift may be needed. And BOTOX lasts about four months, whereas brow lift results last for a decade or more.
