How to Tell If You Have Sun Damaged Eyes

If you spent the majority of the summer relaxing in the sun, then you may have a few freckles on your nose to show for it. And although freckles are cute, there are some types of sun damage (like vision damage) that aren’t quite the same. But how can you tell if your eyes were damaged by the sun? Let’s take a closer look at a few fairly certain indications.

Blurred Vision

The tricky thing about blurred vision is that it can be caused by a variety of different things, including a change in your vision overall. But, if you notice that you are experiencing blurred vision after you spent a lot of time out in the sun, then it is probably caused by ultraviolet damage.

Spotty Vision

Another common sign of sun-damaged eyes is seeing spots; especially right after this happens. If you have ever looked into the sun, you probably saw spots right afterward because it was so bright. When you have sun-damaged eyes, you will typically experience the same sensation, but it will linger for a while.

Pain

Experiencing pain in your eyes isn’t uncommon for patients who have sun damage. Whether you experience lingering pain that won’t subside or you are just experiencing random pain unexpectedly, this is also another sign of sun damage. Try taking an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen to help get rid of any pain for swelling that you may be experiencing.

Vision Loss

In extreme and rare instances, patients who have terrible sun damage will experience temporary vision loss in one or both eyes. If this happens to you, come into our office right away for an exam to ensure that the sun is the culprit and that it’s not something a bit more severe.

The best news about sun-damaged eyes is that they can usually heal on their own without treatment. If, however, you notice that any of your symptoms are worsening or aren’t going away, then you should come into our office for a professional eye exam.
