The Basics of Intraocular Lenses

Cataract Treatment Greenfield MA Technology has quite literally changed the way that we see the world. It used to be that when a patient would have their cataracts removed, they would have to wear either large glasses or thick contact lenses. Nowadays, however, we use intraocular lenses or IOL’s to replace the cloudy lens so that you can see better without having to wear contacts or lenses. If you’ve never heard of these lenses, then you may not know what you can expect. Let’s take a closer look.

Where Will Surgery Take Place?

Typically, surgery will only last about two to three hours and will take place either at an outpatient clinic or at a hospital. After surgery, you will be sent home to recover.

What Is Recovery Like?

Recovery following intraocular lens surgery is straightforward and easy. Just remember that you will not be able to drive following surgery, so make sure that you schedule to either have someone you know pick you up or we can call a ride share service for you. Right after surgery, you should notice an immediate improvement in your vision and that should increase over about a four week period. Additionally, you should be able to resume your normal activities the next day.

Are there Side Effects and Risks?

Although rare, side effects from intraocular surgery may occur but should subside after your eyes have healed. Side effects may include:

  • Redness
  • Scratchiness
  • Sensitivity to light

Similarly, risks of intraocular lens surgery can include:

  • Infection
  • Retinal detachment
  • Increase in eye pressure
  • Reactions to medication
  • Vision changes
