Why does my doctors office ask me to fill out a family health questionnaire at every visit?
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness which causes progressive damage to vision, often with no symptoms or warning signs.
A family health history is a record of health information about a person and his or her close relatives. Together, these factors can give clues to medical conditions that may run in a family and allows an individual to take steps to reduce his or her risk.
Why FDR’s are important
World Glaucoma Association, along with other societies, eye doctors and eye care workers around the world, and the Longwood Eye & LASIK Center are taking time this week to spread the word on 1st Degree Relatives (FDR’s).
The average individual has a 2/3% lifetime risk of developing glaucoma, whereas an FDR can have ten times the risk if a family member has this condition.
The Longwood Eye & LASIK Center, promotes awareness, monitors family health histories, and encourages all of our patients to have regular eye checks, including an optic nerve check to diagnose and treat early, and save sight!
